Child sex abuse in the UK

We've had a lot of sex abuse scandals in the UK lately, some of them about celebrities using their access to young fans for their own purposes.

The latest is a scandal about young people, girls and boys, who were already vulnerable from being taken into care. They were groomed or coerced or threatened into prostitution. The few that spoke out weren't believed.

But when it all came to light, one of excuses put forward by the authorities (police and social services) as to why they didn't take action was because --- wait for it --- the men who were running that sex ring were Pakistani, and those officials didn't want to be seen as racist.

Of course, abusers can be from any ethnic origin - there are plenty of white-ethnic abusers - but for "political correctness" to get in the way of an investigation into something so serious just beggars belief.

What got to me is the end of the article ~

"A former Rotherham care home worker has told the BBC how girls as young as 11 were "brazenly" groomed and abused in the South Yorkshire town.

The man, who worked at children's homes for four years, said girls would be picked up by taxis and abusers made "no attempts to disguise" their actions."

Yes, talk about "hiding in the light". Those men behaved with impunity because they knew they wouldn't be investigated. The abuse those young children suffered was horrendous; but they were also abused by those who should have investigated and put a stop to the abuse. Children weren't listened to, whistle-blowers weren't listened to. One of the aspects of the Jimmy Savile/Operation Yewtree investigation revealed that not only were there longstanding allegations about Savile being a paedophile and a necrophile, but that he regularly hosted senior police officers in his home.

Surely, surely, there's been enough child neglect/abuse/sex/pornography cases lately in the UK for people to have woken up to the reality. We're a small country - about the size of Idaho but with the population density of Connecticut - how much more has been hidden that still needs to be discovered?

It used to be the case that we could feel proud of being British - what with all supposed our values and morals. But I can't feel proud of being British until we've rooted out and exposed the dark side of this nation.

(And the government needs to give more money to Social Services, but I'm not holding my breath about that. They've already stopped legal aid for Family Court cases about custody and access to children, unless there's proven domestic violence, e.g. broken bones.)

Child trafficking Statistics
U.S. & International
I quote Wikipedia ~

Though statistics regarding the magnitude of child trafficking are difficult to obtain, the International Labour Organization estimates that 1.2 million children are trafficked each year. The trafficking of children has been internationally recognized as a major human rights violation, one that exists in every region of the world. Yet, it is only within the past decade that the prevalence and ramifications of this practice have risen to international prominence, due to a dramatic increase in research and public action. A variety of potential solutions have accordingly been suggested and implemented, which can be categorized as four types of action: broad protection, prevention, law enforcement, and victim assistance.

Animals don't do that to their offspring. So much for humans being the superior beings on this planet.

But, as horrible as it is to read about these things, the more that's known, the better the prevention in the future.

I've found the pdf of that, Darlene, and I'll read it tomorrow.

I just find it difficult to even begin to figure out how and when and why it all went wrong. There are some views that humankind was at its heyday when populations were small enough to have a sense of community, but large enough to support craftsmen of various kinds, e.g. weavers and potters. But then the concept of hierarchy crept in, when any natural democracy got replaced by theocracy and aristocracy.

Maybe it's because there are just too many of us.
