I've been rather cowardly in avoiding a lot of the news about this. I just cannot get my mind around the "justification" those men are giving for their actions. This isn't about religion - it's about power, and a love of violence. Women and children only factor in as things to be used. It's brutal thuggery on a massive scale.

The thing is, they don't have a capability of running any kind of state, let alone an Islamic one. The majority of Muslims are peaceful people; and the teachings of Mohammed are a lot to do with living in harmony with each other and the world. Those men don't even have the glimmerings of an understanding of that.

Sorry, I have to speak out. The root of all of this is Saudi Arabia. They are not our friends, they are not our allies, The Saudi King, and the Suadi princes play us in America and UK for fools. They are laughing at us. Of the 19 highjackers on 9/11, 14 were from Saudi Arabia. This whole Muslim vs. Christain is a great game that the Saudi king likes to play with. There's evidence that ISIL was finanaced by the Saudi Arabia elite. ISIL is now seen by Al-Qaeda as even too radical, which is saying something. ISIL WANTS the US to get back into Iraq, the goal has always been, and the same with Al-Qaeda, to destroy America from within by depleating our financial resources, kill our people, play into the desires of right wingers who insist that we must finance these wars at the expense of our domestic infrastructure, then insist we have no budget for anything else while they call for Austerity policies. We fight these wars for Saudi Arabia at our expense.

The Saudi elite deflects their people's anger on their struggles by financing terrorist in every neighboring country.

The Saudi king has fingers in everything, even the Israeli Palestinian conflict is financed with Saudi money. We need to give up this ghost once and for all. Stop buying Saudi oil, America needs to stop sending Military support to Saudi Arabia, let the Saudi King and his princes fall by the hands of their own people. When will we wake up to this?

Matt - thank you very much for your comment. I know very little about the Middle East, but I intend to learn more.

Saudi Arabia doesn't have a good reputation within the UK populace, especially feminists. Ordinary women in Saudi Arabia have very few rights to be individuals. I think one of the most shocking things, though, is that many wealthy Saudi families have bought properties in London, and many of them flock there during Ramadan because it's easier for them. All those visiting Saudi women in London always go out fully covered, but shop in the most expensive places; and all the men drive high-end cars (and often park wherever they choose to, and ignore parking fines). As a country, it seems to have extremes of wealth and poverty. But the wealth seems to be based almost solely on oil, and profits seem to go mostly to a favoured few strands of the royal family.

I've looked to my usual source for lecture courses on a variety of subjects and found this one: https://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/united-states-and-the-middle-east-1914-to-9-11.html. By coincidence, that course in on sale on the UK site (which is the one I use) for almost half price. So I think I'll buy that, just as a starting point.
