Ouija Boards

Hi folks,
I was reading a great article from Paranormal News Insider written about Ouija boards and I wondered if you guys had any feelings about them or personal experiences of your own? Like most people (I would guess) I dabbled a time or two in my wild and crazy youth but I don't recall anything astonishing happened beyond a few words being spelt out here and there but I know some people do regard it as the gateway to hell whereas other think of it as nothing more than a parlour trick.
Have a read and let me know what you think
Eth

Quote

"Is there anyone here who would like to speak to us? Please tell us your name."

A common first line to many who take the adventure of playing with a Ouija board. First of all, Ouija is a registered trademark of Parker Brothers, a subsidiary of Hasbro, and it's a board game made of plastic and wood. So, what's the fuss?

Many people claim to have had strange and evil things happen while or after using a Ouija board, many groups and individuals (paranormal groups and ghost investigators alike) are against anyone using these devices (much to the dismay of Parker Brothers) since they are "dangerous" and "unpredictable" in how they operate.

(Above left: Sign similar to that which many paranormal groups put on their website despite possibly never dealing directly with a Ouija board or even anyone else who has.)

There is a huge debate in the paranormal investigation field about the use of this board. Many groups will not help a client in need if they find out that a Ouija board has been used. Many groups will not use a Ouija board or any other "old" divining technique for various reasons despite possibly never using any.

Christian-based organizations teach that Ouija boards are inherently evil and are the conduit for demons and the Devil, any Earth-bound "ghost" could just be a guise for the Devil himself (party poopers). Many "regular" people claim to have had bad experiences derived from using a Ouija board; including ghosts following them everywhere, poltergeist-like activity, possession and other unpleasant activity. So, why does Parker Brothers continue to sell this game if it is so bad?

I'll skip the history lesson behind the board, if you want to know more about it you can go here, here, here, here or here.

There exists a logical explanation behind what makes a Ouija board work, or rather, how the planchette (plastic piece you place your fingers on) moves. It's called the ideomotor effect and basically your fingers move the planchette without you really realizing it. You may ask or hear a question and then your fingers move to an answer that seems appropriate all without you thinking about moving to that location. Yep, it's been proven scientifically. So, does this explain all of the accounts of people using Ouija boards? What about all of those people experiencing ghosts and poltergeists and stuff?

This is where the belief part comes in. Who's to say there wasn't a ghost there all along? Maybe the subject's sudden open-mindedness caused them to finally interact, OK, maybe that's a stretch, but it's possible for some cases. Maybe they just believed so hard or were scared witless that every little creak caused them to think a ghost was responsible (jumping to conclusions is a recognizable part of being a ghost investigator- we see it a lot!).

A famous research project from the Toronto Society for Psychical Research proves that they actually "created" poltergeist-like activity in 1972 which ended up tipping a table numerous times, the activity was caused by those involved because of their belief in what was going to happen (See Phillip). Regardless of the events that occur, and if they are really paranormal, is it really the fault of the board? Very doubtful and most people realize it's the people and the way they practice that are responsible.

A major explanation many paranormal investigators give against the use of this board is that they can "open" doorways to uncontrolled spirits, ghosts or other malevolent beings. Asking random ghosts can invite terror that can not be controlled without a psychic.

Let's take another approach into consideration. A ghost group is in a home investigating after thorough interviewing (not just "where did ya see it?, Cool, lights out boys!") and they begin to set up their equipment. They go into the master bedroom and pull out a Ouija board and ask, "Is there anyone here who would like to speak to us? Please tell us your name." Heck no, that's bad! I can hear and feel everyone cringing at the thought. If they continue this approach the family (and even the investigators themselves) can be inundated with evil spirits that can make things much worse, right? OK, so, the board isn't the right tool. Let's have them use an EMF detector and a digital recorder, that's better...

"Is there anyone here who would like to speak to us? Please tell us your name."

Hmm, notice anything familiar? The approach used by a Ouija Board and the "scientific" tools are really the same, does it really matter if you call out "Bob" or just for anyone? Why would an electronic tool be any different than a piece of cardboard? The tools measure the environment and can tell us when ghosts are present you say. I say the tools do measure the environment, which is in constant flux and can be unpredictable and not every unexplained blip is paranormal. A fancy light on your EMF detector does not mean a ghost is present, granted, a EVP at the same time would make a great argument.

The point is, why is it OK to use these tools and not a Ouija Board when you are essentially doing the same thing?

Measurement? OK, nice comeback, but how good are your controls? Did you thoroughly measure the environment with mulitple EMF detectors in the same environment you are investigating in? Fine, the Ouija Board doesn't look cool and yes, it does carry with it the negative connotation and sense of careless pursuit versus fancy lights and expensive gadgetry. Who's fault is that? Why are ghost investigators continuously perpetuating this perception to the public when our methods are the modern day verion of this old game and tool?

(At left: An electronic Ouija Board invented in 2008)

Many paranormal investigators claim to have open minds, but they seem to only be open to their own beliefs (actually something that happens in every field in science, so don't take it personally!). We feel safe with out tools since they come with an on/off switch and a manual, but why do we fear tools that have been used for centuries without any real examples of terror? This is only one example of many that we deal with in the field of paranormal investigation (similar to believing in the full/new moon effect and solar activity despite no documentation, so why do almost all groups display this information? Yes, myself included; I document these and lots of other information for all of my cases, not just when I investigate but when the client experiences events as well and eventually this work will be published, not here, but in a scientific journal).

In a forthcoming blog I will explore the effects of belief in the ghost field in closer detail with some suprsing scientific evidence.

Samantha Mulder

Hi folks,
Every now and again I dip into the X-Files and yesterday I settled down for Sein und Zeit and Closure and I have to say I am perplexed. Can anyone recommend a decent article that charts the potted history of the Samantha Arc and puts in neatly into a coherent story because I simply don't have the ability to do that myself.

Whilst we are the subject these episode left me with more than a few questions and I admit it probably wasn't wise to watch it in such a lazy manner but if anyone could clear up the following points I would be very grateful.

1) Why did the mothers experience the phenomena of automatic writing prior to their child's disappearance?
2) If Amber Lynn and Kathy Tencate's son have both been replaced by walk ins to prevent them from leading their unhappy lives then why was neither child depicted as having lead anything other than a happy one.
3) Why the references to Santa Claus in those cases that seem not to have
any link to Santa's North Pole Village?
4) Why did Skinner send Scully cross country to find Mulder and get the report? Could he not just phone or fax?
5) Why is a ghostly apparition of Samantha enough to provide the closure Mulder so desperately seeks. With an absence of her corpse, the revelation that she was taken to a hospital which she later vanished from and some undefined link to a series of child murders I struggle to understand how the belief that she is dead answers any of the questions these new events would have no doubt posed.

I could go on but I'm simply too addled to do so. Any of you folks any help?

Question: What can you say about Fencewalker and working with Chris Carter (The X-Files)?

Katie: Fencewalker was really great. It was actually really challenging for me to take on that role. I can’t say much about it, but I was going through a place in my life, while I was shooting that movie. I went through a difficult time, but it’s something that needed to happen, in order to get all the colors that Chris wanted out of this girl. That needed to happen to me. It was definitely an emotional experience, but nothing that I would ever take back. Chris Carter is a great director and a great writer. The script was amazing! And, I’m so happy to have been a part of something like that. It’s going to be really great. I think that will be out at the end of the year.

Question: Is it hard to keep working on projects that are so secretive?

Katie: I hate secrets! But, it’s fun. It is secret and you can’t talk about it. I’d love to sit here and tell you all about the things that I’ve gone through. It makes it a little difficult when it comes to stuff like this because I can’t really get too in-depth with any of it, as far as the storyline goes, but it makes it exciting.

I hope this is ok to post here as it seemed the most logical place to put it since it is dealing with the great Mark Snow. Just wanted to let everyone know that myself and my friend Emily do a podcast called The Light A Ghost Whisperer podcast about the amazing television show The Ghost Whisperer starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. What some people may not know is that Mark Snow is responsible for the music for the show. Mr. Snow was kind enough to send us some music from the show to let us use on our podcast!!!! You can hear this in our last episode the Christmas episode. Mr. Snow has also been in contact with Emily and is interested in doing an interview with us for the show.. nothing has been confirmed yet and do not have a date when this will happen and it may not happen due to his schedule but we are just so happy and appreciative that he took the time to get in touch with us and send us some music to use.

Emily is an amazing 16 year old young lady who has a very bright future ahead of her in whatever she wants to pusure. She not only does this podcast but runs a Paranormal teen bookclub and is doing another podcast all about Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

If you would like to check us out you can find our podcast on itunes or our website at www.thelightpodcast.webs.com

The Screwtape Letters

I don't know if you guys recall but we banded together in the not too distant past to ensure that our man Lance didn't end up at the top of the annoying celebrities list at AmIAnnoying.com. Now Millennium has made it on to the list but what interested me was the following that was contained in the blurb about the show:

Quote

One episode, 'Somehow Satan Got Behind Me,' was the first film version of C.S. Lewis' 'The Screwtape Letters.'

Now I don't ever recall hearing that before and wondered if you guys knew if there was any truth in the assertion or if it was simply a piece of received wisdom the article writer had happened upon. "The Screwtape Letters" for those not in the know, and I was one of them, I found the following at wikipedia:

Quote

The Screwtape Letters is a Christian apologetics novel written in epistolary style by C. S. Lewis, first published in book form in 1942. The story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior demon, Screwtape, to his nephew, a junior tempter named Wormwood, so as to advise him on methods of securing the damnation of a British man, known only as "the Patient".

Lewis dedicated The Screwtape Letters to his friend J. R. R. Tolkien.

There's absolutely nothing in the Wikipedia article to suggest that Darin was inspired by this tale but there are indeed some similarities. Does anyone recall an interview in which Darin may have talked about this book as a source of inspiration?

Santisima Muerte

Hi folks,
For many years I have been fascinated by the subject of folk saints, individuals who are not officially recognised by the Catholic Church but have been afforded the status of saints by those who adore them. Amongst the many colourful characters who make up the pantheon is one particular saint who satisfies my sense of the macabre as well pandering to my life long fascination with Mexico.

I have tried, over the years, to collect as many books and articles on the subject as I am able but as few are translated into English I have struggled but one Saint who's name is frequently mentioned in whatever literature I find is Santisima Muerte or Saint Death.

Folks Saints tend to evolve from the needs of the people and are entrenched in the culture, traditions and daily lives of the people who venerate them and many claim that Santisima Muerte's cult began amongst the Mexican criminal underworld who flirted with death so regularly it made sense that they befriend her. More likely this is a resurgence pre-Christian Aztec beliefs in deities such us Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl who ruled the Aztec underworld.

Unlike most Saints, Santisima Muerte turns no one away. The only thing we all have that is certain for us is death, death embraces all of us at some point, and for that reason all who approach her are welcomed. Here are a couple of Youtube videos that give more of an insight in to this fascinating phenomena and whilst it is evidently biased to towards the more sensationalist, and seedy, aspects of the cult it gives a better overview than I could alone.

If you like things a little spooky then I have a feeling this Saint is for you

HAARP Project

Hey there!
I've been reading about the HAARP (High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) lately. Well, it's an amazing story. The old Tesla's dream is coming a reality.
But there's a lot of people who advert about a possibility that this project it becomes a weapon controlling the world. And more, the weather, the climatic changes, and earthquakes such in Chile happened lately... even our own minds
Well, they're not stupid people who thought about it. There's a lot of scientists and people with a lot of knowledge too.
OK, the possibility it's a real thing, there is not discussion about it. We know that they have the technology to do it.
And the question is, do you think that they seek that? or do you think that they're really speaking in true and they only want to investigate?
What Frank would think about it? Time is coming up?

Here, a link with part of the book Angels don't play this Haarp Brilliant!!!
This is clearly the best news of the day, if not the year.

"They’ve made me look very good," said Lance Henriksen, "This is the first time I’ve been fully represented in a game, with my voice and how I look, and the Rebellion guys have done a great job. I might score from this game!"
Henriksen has been a huge part of the Aliens franchise, playing the android Bishop in Aliens and Alien 3, as well as his human counterpart Charles Weyland in the first Aliens vs. Predator movie. Quite what Karl Weyland is up to in AvP, we are yet to find out, but whatever it is, it's bound to be awesome.

MLM Firefox 3.6 Persona (Skin)

Just installed Firefox 3.6 and for the first time FF supports customized skins. There 36.000+ Skins for Firefox (=Personas) but sadly no MiellnniuM one yet? Everyone can create their own.
I created a little contst in the XF Fandom, dunno if there are enough MillenniuM patricipants for contest...

Anyway: Let's create some awesome personas.

Quote

Personas are made up of two graphic image files - a "header" image and a "footer" image - which skin the default Firefox UI background.

for the Header:
* Dimensions should be 3000px wide x 200px high
* PNG or JPG file format
* subtle, soft contrast images and gradients work best

* highly detailed images will compete with the browser UI

* Firefox may reveal more of the lower portion of the image if it or an extension adds another toolbar or other UI element to the top of the window
* the right-hand side of the image should have the most important information - as a user increases the width of the browser window, the browser reveals more of the left-hand side of the image

* images must be no larger than 300kb in filesize
* images over 3000px x 200px will not be approved
* never use artwork/logos/photography that you do not have the legal rights to use

Fort he Footer:
* Dimensions should be 3000px wide x 100px high
* PNG or JPG file format
* subtle, soft contrast images and gradients work best

* images must be no larger than 300kb in filesize
* images over 3000px x 100px will not be approved
* never use artwork/logos/photography that you do not have the legal rights to use - you will have to prove you have the rights if the content is questioned

The X-Files comes to Bones on January 14th

Hi guys,
As we all know, Fringe recently had a little X-Files homage and not it's the turn of Bones to do the same. I know many people who watch Bones state how similar the dynamic between Booth and Brennan is to the dynamic between Mulder and Scully and now it looks like it's time for the show's creators to pay a little tribute to the show.

X-Files star Dean Haglund guests on an upcoming Bones episodes called “The X in the File.” Guess they’re not going to miss a single opportunity to pay tribute to the old series as Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth’s (David Boreanaz) investigation of a death in the desert near Roswell, NM.

Haglund plays Blaine Miller, the owner of a diner who might have a clue to the mystery.

The episode was scheduled to air January 14, but Fox looks like they’re still doing some shuffling, so that date may change.

I've only ever seen the odd episode of this show but based on the above I might just have to watch this out of curiosities sake. I'm betting £10 we don't make it to the end of the episode without a little musical cue from the X-Files - that's my prediction.

The Entrance starring Sarah-Jane Redmond

Hi all,
Just to let you know (because you may be interested!) I've uploaded an exclusive extended trailer for one of Sarah-Jane Redmond's new films, The Entrance over at her website. Sarah-Jane incase you are new to Millennium is the actress who played Lucy Butler a firm favourite amongst the fans.

The Entrance is very Millenniumistic and I totally agree with Sarah-Jane when she says the Millennium fans will enjoy it. In fact there is a scene in the trailer where her character is looking down from a door way which reminds me of Lucy looking down from the top of the Black's staircase. Look out for it.

The video was kindly supplied by the writer/director of the film and I've converted it to Flash Video format so you don't need any specific player like QuickTime, Real Media etc.

The extended trailer and information about the show can be found here on SJ's website.
Alternatively head over to the official website of The Entrance which is very atmospheric and has some very chilling, creepy music!
