Episode Summary

Why would Peter Watts risk his life, credibility, friends, family, and career searching for a religious artifact worth little past its mythical value? More importantly, who are the Millennium Group dissidents willing to kill to stop him? Frank Black finds himself troubled by these questions as he and Peter travel to the peat bogs of Germany to find the answers.

Oh dear, oh dear. The tonal nadir of Millennium. A frankly ludicrous attempt to send Frank and Peter off on a romp around Germany in search of a mystical artefact that's right out of Indiana Jones. The tonal upheaval and shifts in identity here beggar belief, most significantly with regard to the Millennium Group itself. What was once a down-to-Earth consulting firm is suddenly transmogrified into an ancient mystic society dating back to the Middle Ages complete with secret codes and passwords!

Suddenly we have insane German stereotypes and villains in long trenchcoats and black hats running around that look like they've walked straight out of a bad 1940s B-movie. What it basically adds up to is the equivalent of a bunch of kids playing in the dress-up box while their friends put it on home video. Add to that the adolescent pornography jokes plus the silly turns in the plot, and it all threatens to turn what was once a dark, harrowing and frightening adult drama into a laughing stock. Let's not even discuss the waste of actor Gottfried John on a character who goes around quoting American TV cops.

The only thing this manages to do successfully is encapsulate in a single episode everything that is loathsome in Season 2. A juvenile comic-book that is very much the Saturday-morning version of the show.
