The Group, or the Event?

The tone is set for the second season in the excellent conversation between the embodiment of good, the Old Man, and Frank. It shows a new direction, a new challenge to Frank, how to get back where he was. His ideas about the Group and Evil are turned on their head by the seemingly omniscient but very coy Old Man. The Old Man is a very strong character, because he is a teacher, not unlike Yoda in Star Wars (of course, he's not as cute, but we'll forgive him his faults). Frank is well-justified in his shock at the Millennium Group's practices, as presented by the Old Man, the theory of letting one die to protect others, and in this, the seed is planted for the season finale, where the whole ideals of the Group are made surprisingly clear. But this is also a starting point for our learning about the beginnings of the Millennium Group. The Ourobouros is explained, as much as anything else ever is on this show, laying the foundation for The Hand of Saint Sebastian and Owls and Roosters, among others. The bottom line about this scene is that it isn't especially scary (although the part where Frank stands right next to the dogs had my heart racing a little bit), but it's so darn important to the season that it can't be ignored.
