"But know ye for certain... Ye shall surely bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city...." (Jeremiah 26:13)

The most terrifying monsters are not things in fantasies, but human beings themselves. I'm reminded of this fact as I watch as young teenage boys are plucked like weeds from their supposedly "safe" environments. This same kind of story we see reflected every day on the news....and so this horrifyingly intense episode really hits home. It also reminds us that, in this country, we wall ourselves up, thinking we can shut out evil. But the evil is within!

The theme in Weeds is somewhat reminiscent of the Pilot episode, with a killer....trying to purify the world. Once again, the killer saw the world "differently". The horrifying images that flashed through his mind gave me chills when I first saw this...and, even now...the cold chills often return.

This episode also seemed to recycle two themes from The X Files storylines. One was the clue of the number 331, referring to a hotel room the first father was having an affair in. This reminded me of Chimera, where the wife who was being cheated on found a key to the hotel room that her husband was having an affair in. Also, the theme of the "sins of the father" being paid for by the son was a theme used often in The X Files.

I was overwhelmingly impressed with "Weeds"....with its drama, its incredible writing, and the wonderful points that it made. It proved yet again, that truth is not only stranger than fiction, it can be more horrifying, and that there doesn't need to be a supernatural monster involved in order to make a fine episode of Millennium.
